What Do I Think About Adult Sticker Charts?

As a therapist who specializes in ADHD—and as a person with ADHD—I’m a big fan of adult sticker charts.

Charts and lists provide visible reminders of what needs to get done. Adding stickers can make completing a task feel exciting instead of simply relieving. Sometimes, the small dopamine boost from anticipating a fun sticker is enough to help someone move through ADHD paralysis and get started.

Sticker charts also encourage us to notice and celebrate everyday accomplishments. That practice can improve self-esteem and overall mood, especially for people who tend to focus on everything they haven’t finished.

For some adults, sticker charts may even help heal childhood wounds from not being parented with enough encouragement, celebration, or kindness.

So yes, use the stickers. Adults deserve encouragement, too.
